For the Cheese Sauce
  • 1 cup White Cheddar Cheese Sharp cheddar can be substituted for added zest.
  • 1 cup Mozzarella Cheese Provolone can be used as an alternative.
  • 2 cups Milk Almond or oat milk can be used as lactose-free alternatives.
  • 4 tablespoons Butter Olive oil is a lighter substitute.
  • 1/4 cup Flour All-purpose is recommended, but gluten-free works too.
For Seasoning
  • to taste Salt
  • to taste Pepper
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder Fresh minced garlic can be used as an alternative.
  • 1 teaspoon Onion Powder Fresh onions can also be used.
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika Feel free to omit for simpler flavors.
Optional Topping
  • 1 cup Breadcrumbs You can omit or use crushed crackers instead.

Method
 

Step‑by‑Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Cook your chosen pasta according to package instructions until al dente, about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.
  3. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat. Whisk in flour to form a roux, cooking until bubbly and golden, about 1-2 minutes.
  4. Slowly whisk in milk to the roux, stirring continuously for about 4-5 minutes until thickened.
  5. Remove from heat, stir in white cheddar and mozzarella cheese until melted, and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, onion powder, and paprika.
  6. Mix the cooked pasta with the cheese sauce until evenly coated.
  7. Transfer the mixture into a greased baking dish. Sprinkle additional cheese and breadcrumbs on top if desired.
  8. Bake for 20-25 minutes until the top is golden brown and bubbly.
