Ingredients

For the Blooming Onions
  • 2 pieces Mini Sweet Onions Choose small onions about the size of a tennis ball
  • 1 cup Flour Gluten-free flour can be used
  • 1 large Egg Acts as the binder for the coating
  • 1/2 cup Milk Use any plant-based milk alternative if desired
For the Spice Mixture
  • 1 teaspoon Paprika
  • 1 teaspoon Garlic Powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon Black Pepper
For Cooking
  • 1 spray Cooking Oil Use a light spritz for crispiness

Equipment

  • Air Fryer

Method

Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Start by peeling the mini sweet onions and cutting off the tops. Carefully make four downward cuts towards the root without cutting all the way through, creating a blooming effect.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine flour and your chosen spices to create a flavorful coating. In another bowl, whisk together an egg and milk. Dip each prepared onion first into the flour mixture, then into the egg wash, ensuring even coverage.
  3. Preheat your air fryer to 375°F (190°C) for about 5 minutes. While it preheats, spritz the frying basket lightly with cooking oil spray.
  4. Carefully place the double-coated onions in the air fryer basket, root-side down. Air fry for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown and crispy, checking halfway through to spritz with more oil if necessary.
  5. Remove from air fryer and let them cool slightly. Serve warm with your favorite dipping sauces.
